Learning to hear the Secret Voices of China Beach (aka New Brighton)

An afternoon walking adventure in and around New Brighton State Beach

The Name China Beach
Back in the early 1930s, when the State of California acquired the western side of present-day New Brighton State Beach, it moved the name "New Brighton" from the place known by that name, over to what was then called China Beach. But, try as they might, the State has not been able to completely erase the name "China Beach" nor silence the Chinese voices.

We will spend an afternoon walking up, over and around New Brighton State Beach, exploring not only the story of the Chinese fishermen who were there, but the Santa Cruz Rail Road story, the 1890s fishermen, the artist colony that grew up there, and Pot Belly Beach.

We will walk approximately 3 miles during the afternoon, and the pace will be leisurely, but there will be several instances where we'll be walking up and down stairs and a trail up the face of the bluff.
